If you have been watching Arrow on the CW or love DC cartoons and comics then you probably ran past this a few times on TV. The Lazarus Pit, a mythical fountain of youth and revitalization that kept the character Ra’s al Ghul alive for centuries. The effects of the pool could heal any wound and bring people back from the dead. The Lazarus Pit is generally tied to Batman lore however with the Arrow show Oliver Queen steps into Bruce Wayne’s shoes many of times.

The Lazarus Pit have not only brought people from the dead like Jason Todd, the second and most annoying Robin (Under The Red Hood), it also cured a brain tumor in Edward Nigma(The Riddler) (Hush). It even healed the womb of the crime fighter Black Canary (Birds of Prey #34). But you know for all the miracles that it can do there is a limitation, the users are known to go crazy for a short period time.

In the mythical idea of the Lazarus pit lets dive into the bible to see who is this Lazarus and why he has a pit named after him that he never used.To learn about Lazarus we will have to check out John 11. John 11 starts off telling us that Lazarus, Mary of Bethany’s (Luke 10:38-42) brother, is sick and in need of Jesus’ healing. (John 11:1-3) When Jesus found out he told his disciples that “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” (John 11:4). They left a few days later to see Lazarus in Judea (John 11:6-7) but Jesus knew that by the time he would arrive he would be dead. (John 11:14) However we all can find it interesting that Jesus says, that he is just going to wake him up. (John 11:11) This wasn’t that death like sleep that Sleeping Beauty was in for a few hours (Maleficent) or one hundred years (the actual fairy tale) this was the finality of life death. Who could say I am just going to wake them up? Jesus did and he meant every word so that God can have the glory.

When Jesus got to Judea Lazarus was already in the tomb for four days. (John 11:17) When he met up with Martha he comforted her by telling her that her brother will rise again. (John 11:23) But the next thing that was said I have to display fully:

John 11:24 – 27 – 24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” 27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”

Unless you are truly blessed we all have known the pain of loss that comes from the death of a loved one. To hear anyone tell you that the person you love will rise again could cause all types of emotions that aren’t positive to spring forth. However, Jesus telling Martha this is something different. The Son of God is telling you that he will be of the living once again. You have to trust and believe him because he is the resurrection and the life.

Well when Jesus arrived at the tomb and requested that the stone is removed from the entrance. (John 11:38-39). Per Martha, there was already a smell coming from the tomb. It’s a smell that no person would ever want to smell. The smell of death and the compounding of it from being in an enclosed room. But Jesus reminded Martha that, “If you believe, you will see the glory of God.” (John 11:40) The stone was removed and Jesus prayed saying:

John 11:41 – 42 – 41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”

After that, standing at the mouth of the tomb, Jesus shouts, “Lazarus, come out!” (John 11:43) With that Lazarus wrapped in linen and clothed in burial clothing. (John 11:44) Jesus brought a man back from the dead. Same as the Lazarus Pit can do in the realm of DC comics. When you think about it the Lazarus Pit should be called the Jesus Pit because it has done wonders that only Jesus can preform. But if Jesus revived or healed you there wouldn’t be any side effects of psychosis.

There are many things to take away from this tale but if you don’t remember a single thing please remember this. If you believe in Jesus you will see the glory of God. What you pray for may not come when you want it or how you want it but you must keep believing and keep praying. He may not revive the person that you love but he can revive that business, that relationship, that job opportunity, that dream that you let pass in your heart. He is the resurrection. Keep your faith and keep believing in him and give God the glory when you see your hopes and dreams come to pass.

Heavenly Father, thank you for sending your Son, my king, Jesus to teach us to depend on you. I pray that you resurrect the people, hopes, and dreams that have lost in my life. I know that I can only  see and experience this as long as I keep the faith. My God, I thank you for all that you have done in my life and will do in the days, months, and years to come. In Jesus name, Amen.
