Matthew 16:18 – And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. (NIV)
Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron came out to box office success. My favorite character in the movie was Ultron. He had character and substance. However, I don’t believe that they showed enough of him. One scene in the movie that was noteworthy to me was when he met the twins at the church in the center of the country of Sokovia. In his rambling he actually quoted part of the scripture above, “and on this rock I will build my church.” After watching I would have never guessed that he meant those words in the same way that Jesus meant it when he spoke to Peter. Just not in a positive way of course. Ultron is the villain of the story. Follow me as we take a walk through the Bible and reminisce on a pretty awesome film.
Possible spoilers will be ahead…
If we look at just Matt 16:18 we see read what Jesus told Peter. He told him that upon this rock I will build my church. Let’s concentrate on the word rock right now. Looking at the sentence without looking at it any deeper you would know he meant on Earth. For that you would be correct. But Peter in Greek also means rock. A Jesus said, “I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock” He will build His church. He was also saying that Peter will be the person, “the rock” that will be the foundation of the new Christian churches.
The other part of the scriptures states that he will build his church on this rock. Now church actually have two meanings as well. We know in the normal reading of it we can take it as a physical church. However, church can be described as a group of people that congregates for Christ. No building required. Peter is supposed to take what he learned from Jesus and expand the ministry.
1 Corinthians 12:27 – Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. (NIV)
Now let’s take it back to Ultron’s mumbling in the film. When he said “upon this rock I build my church” you would first think that he was being poetic since he was standing in the middle of the church in the center of Sokovia. He actually meant the land that they stood upon. Ultron had built, below the church, a machine in the hollowed out caverns for his master plan. He can also take the rock as himself as Jesus would say of Peter. He is taking upon himself to rebuild the world into people of metal. Now that we see that Ultron saw himself as Peter as the rock or foundation of his plan for world destruction and domination.
Now the church also meant two things as well in the scripture as well as with Ultron. As we discussed earlier about the location of his machine it was under the church in the center of town. We can also see that church also mean multiple people joined as one. Ultron created many bodies for himself and all were working in unison because all of them were him. As the chuch is one body in Christ all of the robots that Ultron built were of one body of Ultron. Ultron effectively created his church on that rock.
